Every tool in this category will produce 1,500 words on your keyword. That stopped being a differentiator around 2023, and it is not what separates the fifteen below. Judging whether those 1,500 words are any good is a separate job, and our 8-point SEO copywriting checklist is what we run drafts against.
What separates them is where the article ends up. Some hand you a draft to copy into your CMS, which leaves you with the two jobs that actually take the time, publishing and linking. Others go all the way to a live, internally linked post. That distinction runs through this whole list, and it is the first thing each entry states.
How we checked this list
All fifteen were loaded on their live sites in August 2026 and screenshotted, so every product here resolved and is real. Anything that 404ed or turned out to be a parked domain was cut before writing.
Pricing in this category is a moving target and several vendors changed plans while this was being written, so each entry describes the model rather than quoting a figure that will be stale in a month. Our own product is entry one, and the reason is given there along with what it does not do.
Draft, optimise, or publish: pick the right group
| Group | What you get | What is still on you |
|---|---|---|
| Draft writers | Text in a document | Optimisation, publishing, linking, images |
| Optimisers | A score and a brief against the live SERP | The writing, and everything after it |
| Publishing platforms | A live post in your CMS | Editing and strategy |
Most buyers want the third and shop in the first, because the first is where the marketing is loudest.
1. Distribb, research through to a published, linked article
We make this one, so read the limitation before anything else. It belongs at the top of this particular list because the category is article writing software and the whole product is built around finishing the job rather than producing a draft.
It picks the keyword from your Search Console data, writes the article, publishes it directly into WordPress, Webflow or Shopify, and adds internal links from the new post to the rest of your library and back again. The backlink exchange then covers the off-page half by earning links from other sites in the network rather than buying placements.
Honest limitation: it is opinionated and built for volume on a schedule, so it is a poor fit if you want to sit inside an editor and control every sentence. There is no real-time content score to optimise against like Surfer or Clearscope, and for a single flagship page that a specialist will hand-craft, one of the optimisers below is the better tool. It works on published throughput, not on one perfect article.
There is a 3-day free trial, and our guide to automated SEO software covers the wider category.
Publishing platforms, article to live post
2. Byword, bulk generation straight to WordPress
Built for producing articles at volume and publishing them automatically, with a spreadsheet-like workflow for queueing hundreds of titles at once. Popular with programmatic and affiliate operators for exactly that reason.
The catch: volume-first tooling makes it very easy to publish a lot of mediocre pages quickly, which is a real risk rather than a theoretical one.
3. SEO Writing AI, one-click articles with auto-publish
Generates SEO articles in one click, adds images, and pushes them to WordPress on a schedule. The bulk mode and the low price point make it a common starting purchase.
The catch: output reads generically without heavy prompting, and the internal linking is basic compared to a dedicated platform.
4. Arvow, keyword discovery through to formatted post
Runs the workflow from finding low-competition keywords to publishing a formatted article with images, links and videos, positioned specifically at agencies managing several sites.
The catch: a younger product than most here, so expect a smaller feature surface around the edges.
5. Koala, writing plus a genuine affiliate angle
Well regarded for readable long-form output and unusual in pulling live product data into affiliate content, with WordPress publishing built in.
The catch: strongest for affiliate and review content, less differentiated for straightforward B2B articles.
6. RankYak, fully automated on a schedule
Picks keywords, writes and publishes daily with almost no input, aimed at founders who want the channel running without touching it.
The catch: the low input is the point and also the risk. Very little says no to a bad keyword choice.
7. Outrank, articles with internal linking handled
Writes and publishes with attention to internal linking and schema, which puts it ahead of the pure draft generators on the parts that affect rankings.
The catch: smaller than the established names, so integrations are more limited.
8. AI SEO, built around AI search visibility
Has repositioned around visibility in AI answers rather than blue links alone, which is a defensible bet on where this is going, with writing tools attached.
The catch: the AI visibility framing is newer than the writing engine underneath it. Judge the drafts on their own.
Long-form specialists
9. SEO.AI, topic and keyword to polished draft
Give it a topic and keyword and it returns a properly formatted article with the structural elements editors expect, plus competitor insight from the ranking pages.
The catch: it stops at the draft. Publishing and linking remain your problem.
10. Agility Writer, long-form with live SERP data
Plans topical maps and drafts from live SERP data, optimising entities, internal links and schema, which makes it one of the more technically serious writers here.
The catch: more configuration than the one-click tools. Budget time to learn it.
11. Jasper, the enterprise brand voice option
Built for marketing teams that need consistent brand voice across many writers and channels, with SEO as one use case rather than the whole product.
The catch: priced for teams, and its SEO depth is shallower than the specialists on this page.
12. Writesonic, broad toolkit with SEO features
A wide set of writing tools with article generation, SERP research and publishing integrations bundled together.
The catch: breadth over depth, and the interface carries a lot of features you will never open.
The optimisers, for when a human is writing
13. Surfer SEO, the content score people actually use
Analyses what currently ranks and gives a live score as you write, with an AI writer attached. Pair it with a human and it reliably improves on-page relevance.
The catch: the score is a proxy, not a ranking factor, and chasing it to 90 produces stuffed, unpleasant copy.
14. Clearscope, the premium brief
The cleanest reports in this group, favoured by editorial teams who want a brief a freelance writer can follow without a training session.
The catch: the most expensive way to solve this, and it does not write anything for you.
15. Frase, research and brief building on a budget
Pulls the ranking pages together into a brief and outline quickly, at a fraction of Clearscope's cost, with writing features included.
The catch: the AI writing is weaker than the research half. Use it for briefs.
How to choose in one question
Ask what happens after the draft exists. If your bottleneck is producing text, any tool on this page solves it, and the cheapest one will do.
If your bottleneck is that drafts pile up unpublished, an optimiser or a draft writer will make the pile bigger. That is a publishing problem, and only the platforms in the second group address it. Our comparisons of AI content writing tools and SEO content writer software go deeper on the drafting side.
The honest summary
Text generation is now a commodity and no tool on this list has an advantage there worth paying for. The advantage is in what surrounds the text: choosing the keyword from real data, getting the article live, and linking it into a library so it is not an orphan.
Four neighbouring pages narrow this down. Free AI article generators covers what free actually means here, AI content creation tools widens it beyond articles, and SEO article writing services covers paying people instead of software. For using one properly rather than choosing one, see the AI SEO article writer guide and how to use an AI article writer. Our AI content writer covers the publishing group specifically, which is the one that addresses the pile of unpublished drafts.
Distribb does that end to end, with a 3-day free trial, and it is deliberately not the tool for hand-crafting one flagship page. If that is your job this quarter, buy Clearscope or Surfer and write it yourself.
